You are probably already aware that Netflix in Australia is missing a lot of the content which comes with Netflix in the USA. Americans get to enjoy both more TV shows and movies on Netflix and this is the main reason why so many Aussies choose to change their Netflix region to USA. In this comprehensive tutorial, I will provide you with detailed instructions on how to get the American version of Netflix in Australia using VPN or Smart DNS proxies. I have included tutorials for most of the popular streaming devices such as Android, iOS, PS4, Xbox, Fire TV, and Apple TV.
How to Get American Netflix in Australia – The VPN Solution
If you’re not completely convinced about the usefulness of Smart DNS, you can try a VPN. VPN also helps you unlock regionally blocked content. A VPN enables you to obtain an IP address from the country where the content you want to stream isn’t blocked. This means that you have to choose a US VPN server and get an American IP address if you want to watch US Netflix.
Choosing an American VPN server means you get access to all Internet channels that are exclusively available in America. You can Watch US Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu, WWE Network, and many more streaming networks.
A VPN efficiently encrypts your traffic data to protect you from eavesdropping by your ISP, government agencies, or hackers.
As long as you are using VPN, you can switch your local IP address for a foreign one. However, this might result in not being able to access some local websites.
A VPN still works efficiently even if an ISP uses Transparent Proxies or DNS Hijacking.
Thanks to VPN clients and apps for PC/Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android, installing a VPN on these devices only takes a couple of minutes.

Best American VPNs in 2017
I spent a considerable amount of time searching and testing different VPN providers. At the moment, I’m using ExpressVPN. They provide around the clock support, have about 97 VPN locations around the world, and offer a 30-day refund guarantee. Most importantly, however, is the fact you can still get American Netflix using any of the top VPNs in the list below.
How to Get American Netflix in Australia – Smart DNS Solution
Read This Update:Unlocator does not support unblocking Netflix anymore. As of January 15th, 2018 I have tested ExpressVPN and can confirm that this method still works. If you are receiving the following Netflix proxy error (netflix.com/proxy). “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.”To get American Netflix in Australia, you can use ExpressVPN.
My preferred method when it comes to unblocking and changing Netflix regions is Smart DNS. To use this method, you have to change your DNS codes on your streaming device. The Smart DNS Proxy service you choose provides you with the needed DNS codes. Smart DNS only has to re-channel bits of your connection to help you bypass all sorts of regional restrictions. It has many other advantages as well.
All streaming devices are compatible with Smart DNS. You can unblock US/UK or any other Netflix region on your iPhone, Android, PC/Mac, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, PS4 or Xbox.
Since Smart DNS doesn’t redirect all your traffic, you will not suffer from Internet speed loss.
You can unblock geoblocked content from multiple regions simultaneously. This gives you the chance to watch both UK Amazon Instant Video and US Netflix without needing to make any changes to your Smart DNS configuration.
Your local IP address remains the same and you don’t have to worry about getting blocked from accessing any Australian websites or online services.
As mentioned earlier, you can take advantage of Unlocator’s 7-day free trial to test Smart DNS. I’ve been using their services for quite some time and they are constantly adding to their list of 197 unblocked channels. You can also check their video/setup guides if you need help with your Smart DNS configuration.
How to Check Your Netflix Region
Follow these simple steps to validate whether you are really getting American Netflix or not.
First, setup VPN or Smart DNS on your streaming device as instructed above.
Then, log into your Netflix account.
Select the ‘Search’ bar.
Type the following ‘Star Crossed’.
If the title shows up, click on it and try to watch it.
If the title plays correctly, you have successfully changed your Netflix region to USA.
In case you cannot find that title, or if you are getting the Netflix Proxy error, you are not really watching American Netflix. In that case, contact your VPN provider’s support or simply sign up with a different VPN service.
